With so many beautiful cot bumpers on the market, it's easy to see the appeal. But when it comes to your baby’s sleep space, safety always comes first.
At The Baby Den, we only stock carefully chosen, handmade EU products — and we understand that parents need clarity, not confusion. That’s why we’ve created this simple guide to using cot bumpers safely, plus a free downloadable care sheet for extra peace of mind.
What Is a Cot Bumper?
A cot bumper is traditionally a padded fabric panel designed to attach to the inside of a cot. It’s intended to protect babies from bumping into the wooden slats or getting arms and legs stuck between bars.
However, traditional padded bumpers have raised concerns with UK health organisations due to risks of overheating, suffocation, or entrapment.
The Lullaby Trust advises against using cot bumpers in infants' sleep spaces.
Who Are They For?
We primarily recommend our cot bumpers for toddlers aged 12 months and over, particularly as a versatile alternative to large toddler nests and when transitioning from a cot to a toddler bed. At this stage, bumpers can offer extra comfort and a sense of cosiness.
We are also aware that many parents choose cot bumpers for younger babies under 12 months. Ultimately, this is a personal parenting decision. Our goal is not to promote or discourage any choice — but to provide trusted, balanced information so you can make an informed decision that feels right for your family.
If You Choose to Use One, Do It Safely
Our handmade braided bumpers are decorative and removable. While no cot bumpers are recommended for sleep by UK health bodies, we know many parents choose them for supervised use or as part of nursery styling.
If you choose to use a cot bumper, always follow these safety steps:
- Check for damage before each use (ribbons, fabric, seams).
- Secure with multiple tie points — never loosely attached.
- Ensure free airflow — never block baby’s face or ventilation.
- Remove when baby can sit unaided — climbing risk.
- Keep away from heat sources.

Alternatives to Cot Bumpers
For parents who prefer to follow UK sleep safety guidance, here are safer alternatives:
- Clear cot sides – recommended by the NHS and The Lullaby Trust.
- Moses baskets - as a safe cosy sleep space for newborn babies
- Baby sleeping bags – keep baby warm without loose bedding.
- Supervised use only – bumpers used during playtime, as a tummy time support or for photoshoots.

At The Baby Den, we believe in informed choices. Whether you’re creating a calm nursery or simply styling your cot for photos, we encourage every parent to read, research, and decide what feels safe and right for their family.
