What Bedding Does a Baby Really Need?

What Bedding Does a Baby Really Need?

As a new parent, walking into the nursery section can feel like entering a maze of fluff, frills, and far too many opinions. From duvets and pillows to swaddle wraps and sleep pods – how do you know what’s actually needed?

This calm, no-fuss guide breaks down what bedding is safe, practical and worth investing in for your baby’s first year – and when it's time to adapt.

Keep it Simple (and Safe) for the First 12 Months

In the UK, official safe sleep guidance from The Lullaby Trust is clear: less is more when it comes to baby bedding. Here’s what they recommend – and what you can confidently skip.

Recommended:

  • Firm, flat mattress with a waterproof cover – well-fitted and safety-tested
  • Fitted sheet – breathable cotton or muslin, nothing bulky
  • Light layers: muslin swaddle, light breathable blanket, or tog-rated sleeping bag

Avoid (for now):

  • Pillows and duvets (not recommended until at least 12 months)
  • Loose bedding or items that could ride up
  • Soft toys or bumper pads during sleep

Think Temperature, Not Thickness

In the UK, the ideal room temperature for baby sleep is 16–20°C. The rule of thumb: dress your baby in one more layer than you’d wear yourself.

Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics such as:

Quick Tip for First-Time Parents

Start light and add a layer only if needed. Check your baby’s temperature by feeling the back of their neck – if it’s sweaty, they may be too hot.

When to Add More Bedding

As your baby grows, you may gradually introduce:

  • Cot bumpers (for babies 12 months+), securely attached and breathable
  • Toddler duvet and pillow – only once your child can safely adjust them independently
  • Full bedding sets for cot beds or toddler daybeds

But for now, simple, breathable and minimal is still best.
